I wouldn't do it unless I was in the most dire of circumstances... and if I was in the most dire of circumstances, I really couldn't afford to lose that money, and wouldn't do it for that reason.

Based on how you described it, it seems like a scenario that happens right before people get ripped off. Money and bud should not do any changing of hands unless both are present and visible at once. The only exception being if a small sample of bud is handed over on good faith for a few seconds to be examined prior to purchase of quantity. Out of your hands is fine, but out of your sight is extremely shady. Unless you mean your friend is acting as an escrow and holding the money during the transaction, in which case I would make sure it was a close friend I'd known for years. You can never be too careful, and if you say the right things no one will get pissed off.
