when plants start maturing there are preflowers that you should be able to tell if they are male or female. probably at about 6 weeks old at the nodes/crotches of the leaves/branches. i wasnt good at guessing the first time i tried, i flowered them anyways and i wasnt correct on a few of them. now i would say i could tell since i have seen them a few times. i like to take 3 clones from each plant to increase the survival rate, number them and the parent plant with the same # and flower the parent as usual. once you know what the parent plant is, you keep the clones from the female ones and you have some ready to go as soon as you harvest. some people do the opposite and flower a clone first and find what the parent will be to save room but i like my way better. you will need a second light on a different schedual to do this. a cfl works fine for starting clones and starting them off into cups untill they get too big. and you can clone as soon as you know the sex in flowering but it isnt the best way.
