A Muslim man accused of killing his 16-year-old daughter because she refused to wear a head scarf appeared in a Canadian court Wednesday and was ordered held without bail.

Muhammad Parvez, 57, faces a murder charge in the death of his daughter, Aqsa. The teen died Monday, hours after she was found without a pulse in her family??s home in the Toronto suburb of Mississauga.

Police refused to say how she died, but the Toronto Star quoted a source as saying the 10th-grader had been strangled. Another source told the newspaper the girl had been beaten.

Police said they had received a call Monday from a man who told them he had just killed his own daughter.

Handcuffed and wearing an orange prison jumpsuit, Parvez appeared Wednesday morning in court in Brampton, Ontario.

The taxi driver was ordered held without bail until a hearing set for Jan. 29.

Parvez??s only comment was to answer ??yes? when asked if he understood a court order not to communicate with his son.

The son, Waqas Parvez, 26, was also arrested and charged with obstructing justice.

Friends of Aqsa said she had clashed with her family because she wanted to wear Western clothes and rebelled at covering her long dark hair with the hijab, or head scarf.

"She would tell us how her dad would always yell at her and how he wanted her to be someone else," Natalie Rance, 14, told the Star.

"Her dad wanted her to be a person who followed the religion. But she wanted to follow her own rules, wear her own clothes. But her dad wouldn't let her do that."

??She was always scared of her dad, she was always scared of her brother,? another schoolmate said.
