Water.
Tap water is generally just fine, as long as it's coming from a clean source and the pH isn't too high or low. I only use distilled water for final flushing, and germinating seeds.
As for watering your plants, there is no specific guidelines for this. If you're using soil, water when the need arises. Water too much, and you're just asking for trouble. Same goes for not watering enough.
