Simply because in order for it to be the same it has to have been kept alive through clones or through seeds kept from the original breeding session.

So there is no way it could be more potent if its the same. Also its not just purple haze because its purple!
Exactly, in most cases, purple strains only show the purple hue when flowering. A lot of purple buds aren't acctually purple strains; they have just been affected by a cooler temp. during the growing process.

Also, it is common knowledge that potency has increased over the passed 15 years in marijuana. Before most of the more potent strains were about 12-15 % THC. Nowadays, it's not uncommon to see strains over 22-25%. That's why I suggested it was more potent. In most cases, purple haze is a slang for purple varieties crossed with a haze strain.

I made that assumption based on what I've heard from people who smoked in the 70's and 80's and early 90's.

It has become more of a science for growers nowadays as it was a hobby before.
