Are weed smokers really peace loving hippies?

I was down at my local head shop this weekend and couldn't help noticing that almost half of the paraphernalia for sale was covered in either: 'CND' symbols, or 'Hippie' type 'peace and love' imagery. "Not that there is anything wrong in being a hippie", some of my best friends are tree huggers, and I always was in favour of a bit of 'free love'. But, is this what the average stoner is really about these days, or is it just a tired old cliche that manufacturers assume is going to help Rating: 5

I was alive when the original hippie era happened, although I was a little kid. I consider myself to possess a hippie soul. I'm a pacifist. An environmentalist. I advocate freedom of lifestyle choices and legalization of cannabis. I'm politically liberal. I'm spiritual rather than formally religious. On the surface, I look more like a yuppie soccer mom, so some people are very surprised when I reveal my social beliefs, which, I suppose, were molded by my academic, beatnik-era parents.

OK here's how I see the whole thing. You go into a head shop and there are racks of tie-dyes, Grateful Dead posters and peace sign bongs. It's a stereotype. I saw The Dead and it was a great show. Doesn't make me a Dead Head. I'm anti-war. (I fought in a war so I feel I have a right to that opinion) That doesn't make me a hippie. I disagree with the government. That doesn't make me an anarchist. When I buy a piece it isn't going to be adorned with a dancing bear. I like to smoke pot. That doesn't make me a loser. I have a job and I go to school full time. I go to the American Legion and listen to the old timers talk about how marijuana is bad and I try to help them understand that they have been misinformed. Hippies were a group of like minded people who were looking for a better way. For some of them they found it. Others fell back into society and managed to live productive lives. What I don't get is some 18 year old kid growing dreads and wearing dyes claiming they are a hippie while driving their dad's BMW to Grateful Dead tribute band concerts at $50 a clip and proclaiming themselves a hippie.

Peace and love are cool and all, especially if it can get you laid, but that is not me.

The hippie ideas failed. It is a total media generated stereotype that pot smokers are hippies.

i think hippies give weed smokers a bad name, i dont want people to assume im a barefoot, dirt poor, tree hugging, tie dye wearing, not shaving, long haired, burnt out person thats only concerned with sitting in drum circles bashing the govt but being to scared to do anything about it. The whole hippie scene is terribly overrated

besides hippies were in the past, anyone that wants to be a modern day hippie should go live in a special compound in the middle of the desert. Havent you guys seen Easy Rider???, Thats what a real hippie should be like.

i would agree. I don't think that hippies are bad, i just think its bad when people think everyone who smokes weed is a hippie, which i'm sure you all know is not the case. I don't think that stereotypes for pot smokers are that bad anymore. I think that people who don't smoke understand that its something we enjoy, just like w.e they do in their spare time. It's true for me. I love love, I love peace, and I hug trees on a regular basis. I also like furry woodland creatures. I shop local, buy organic, and like to quote Gandhi and his ilk.

Call me a hippie if you must, but I like to think of it as being God-fearing and principled.

Oh, but you are right about tie-dye and Dead merchandise and whatnot. It's totally last generation. That's not me. I am into American Apparel and stuff like that. "Teacher clothes" is what one of my buddies would call my fashion taste. Lol.

I work in a food co-op. I'm a vegetarian. I try to only eat organic.

..oh and...I listen to massive amounts of reggae and classic rock...and jam bands.

at one time, I was not like that at all
I do believe that Marijuana has helped reach this state of being that I am in..I see what I have learned in the way of peace and harmony and it has passed on 2 both my daughters, so in an inadvertant way they have both benifited also:hippy:

Over here in England i'd say that about 50% of smokers are aged 12 to 21, wear burberry caps, tuck their tracky bottoms into their socks, wear fake gold earrings and would steal your shoelaces if they had half the chance. I dont go near them due to the fear of catching Stupid Dickhead's Disease. The only time they hug trees is when they are trying to gnaw the bark off so that they dont have to waste money on toilet paper.
