Phone Tapping?

Last night I was hanging out with a group of friends and one of my friends said that his phone is tapped. I asked him how he knew that it was and he told me that there are 2 methods to determine this. The first one being if you Call 202-543-9994 and
Listen for a steady monotone signal with no interrupts. That means you are not being tapped. If you hear any interruptions in the signal tone, then you are being listened to. Everyone over at the house was calling this number and they received the "steady monotone signal with no interrupts", when I called this number I heard the interruptions in the line just as my friends did. He also told me about another method that I have not yet tested. Which consist of calling 101028817709889664 and if you hear a voice that says â??1â?� or â??2â?� that means no tap is underway. If you hear â??3â?� or â??4â?� you are tapped. I was wonder if anyone else has heard of this, and if it was possible to actually tell if my phone is actually tapped?

First of all, some people will tell you that thereâ??s a phone number you can call that will tell you if your phone is tapped. They say that you call it and youâ??ll hear a contant tone. If the tone does a certain thing, your phone is tapped and if it does something else, your phone isnâ??t tapped. This is stupid. Those tones are called â??sweep tonesâ?� and theyâ??re used by phone company technicians. They have nothing to do with tapping anyoneâ??s phone. If someone tries to tell you that they have a number that detects taps, hit them. Hard.

The best way to detect a physical tap on your own line is to carefully inspect every inch of phone wire in your home. Start from the outside, where the phone line comes from the pole. Open up your grey TNI box and look for anything unusual inside. You can also open up the â??restrictedâ?� side of the box and check in there. It requires a special alan wrech that you can probably find at your hardware store. After inspecting the outside, go back inside and figure out where the lines are coming from that box into the house. If you have a basement, itâ??s probably there. Follow every wire, noting anything suspicious. Then look closely at every telephone in your house and trace the wiring back into the wall. Obviously some wires are going to be run through walls and itâ??s up to you if you want to start busting into the walls.

So you didnâ??t find anything? Well thereâ??s still a few things to consider. What if the person whoâ??s tapped your phone has actually hidden the tap inside one of the phones? Some of the more advanced taps can be very small and easily fit inside a phone. Itâ??s not very hard to use a screwdriver and take apart your phones. If youâ??re not comfortable taking things apart, chances are that you know somebody who is. Be sure to take apart both the base of the phone and the handset.

If you live in an apartment building, your neighbors could have access to your phone lines. If they know where the phone jacks on your side are located, they could punch through their own walls and hook up an extension jack in their own apartment. From this extension they could make free long distance calls or they could put a tap on your line and listen to all of your calls. Also, in most apartment buildings all of the phone lines come into one central place from the telephone poles. From there, the lines are run into each apartment unit. At that central location, a tenant could simply add a few wires running from his line to yours and theyâ??d have access to your line. Most phone cables have four wires inside of them - red, green, yellow and black. If you have one phone line, youâ??re probably just using the red and green. The yellow and black wires donâ??t do anything. A neighbor in your apartment could hook YOUR red and green wires to HIS yellow and black wires which would create a second line in his apartment. Which would be YOUR line. If you think this is happening, you could ask the phone company to come and check your lines. You could even claim that youâ??ve picked up your phone before and somebody has been on it so they would know what theyâ??re looking for.

One last scenario - you know those green rectangular phone company boxes you see out in the streets and in back yards? The ones by your house contain your phone lines and probably 100 or so other phone lines of neighbors. People have been known to open up these boxes and hook their own phone into them. Itâ??s easier than you would think for a person to figure out which of the lines in these boxes are yours. They could even do the yellow-black wires red-green wires trick to create an extension of your phone in their house. Even if their house is several blocks away!
Finally, there are government taps. If youâ??re a bad person and the government thinks you need a tap on your line, they can do it and you wonâ??t be able to detect it. Itâ??s done from the phone companyâ??s switch and thereâ??s nothing you can do to prevent it. They can tap your cell phone calls the same way. Your only way to escape government phone taps is to go use a pay phone or a prepaid cellular phone. And stop doing illegal things that makes the government tap your phone, you damn criminal.

i dont know about now adays or every where else but back in the mid 80s i had my phone tapped. i got a call one day asking for me by my full name. when i said yes im here they asked if it was me they were talking to when i said yes they simply said thank you and hung up. they were getting a voice recognition.

also another way to tap is on wreless phones is between the base and the handset and to cature the signal as it is transmitted between the two.

Wow, I smell the stench of paranoia in this thread. Why would those numbers know anything about the security of your phone? Why would law enforcement allow this number to exist? 202 is a Washington D.C. area code, right? That's like the convergence of law enforcement in the U.S. You have CIA, FBI, NSA, Secret Service, Department of Justice, not to mention local agencies. So how convenient it is that this cool phone number that let's people in on secret wire tapes is nesseled in the heart of American law enforcement. Chances are that the number rings a computer at one of the agencies and now they know you are up to something. That's like having a judge sign a search warrant then the police call you up and tell you in 12 hours they're going to serve the warrant. Taps work best with the element of surprise and I don't see how the government would allow this or even leak techincal data to make it possible.

Next, to the matter of getting a warrant for a tap isn't easy. Judges don't sign off on them as much as movies and tv would make you believe. You have to be pretty high on the food chain or be suspected of some other serious serious crime like first degree felony or some states they're called class A felonies. Then the cops have to invest many many many man hours and resources in using the tap. They can't just listen to everything on the phone in most cases as the judge usually sets parameters on what can be listened to. Even if you have an angry ex lover or arch enemy, I doubt they tapped your phone.

Also, the term tap is really outdated as they don't cut into a line and install something like the older days. Nowadays, since most phone calls, landline or mobile, go through some sort of "digital switchboard" everything can be done with electronic programs nice and neat and clean. They even have the roving bug which was supposed used against the Genovese family. Please don't tell me you are engaged in criminal activites that rival on of the top mob families in New York City.
