Don't use a pot that is too large at any life stage.
Re-pot when the plant has more than one foot of main stem per available gallon of root space.
A quart pot can support a short, bushy plant up to about 10".
A gallon, that can hold a reasonably bushy foot tall plant or a 10" plant that has been trained a bit more.
I flower in a 3 gallon pot and the plants finish at approximately 18-22" and 3-4 main leaders.
