    The power of persuasion- hypnosis

I have always been interested in hypnosis. I did a paper in high school on alternative medicine, and one of the stories I used was about a doctor in South America who did surgery with only hypnosis as the anesthesia, and the patients reported no pain. I'm not sure I'd go under the knife with hypnosis as my only painkiller, but it was very interesting to me, just like acupuncture or biofeedback is as well.

only a small percentage of the people can be hypnotized. i believe my psych professor said it was 1 in 10, the rest of the people are just faking it.
one time someone tried to hypnotize me and i faked it so he could get his sick kicks lol.

    This is actually incorrect.

First, all of us pass through the hypnogogic (sp?) state every time we fall asleep. Most of us also enter that state briefly several times a day, usually involuntarily. Any time you zone out looking at the computer or television you're in the hypnogogic state.

The question is, can someone else induce you to enter that stat, and to remain in that state for an extended period of time? That's what is actually meant by "hypnotism". The 1 in 10 your professor is referring to is actually the percentage of the population who's highly susceptible to hypnosis. They can by hypnotized almost anywhere, any time by anyone who knows what they're doing. Another 1 in 10 is highly resistant. The rest of us fall somewhere in between. For the in between group, the success of attempted hypnosis depends on a number of factors, including current mood, how much they trust the hypnotist, how comfortable they are in their environment, etc.

And just for the record, the "I was only faking it" is actually a very common response for people who've been truly hypnotized for the first time lol. Yes, some people do actually fake it, but an experienced hypnotist - as opposed to your psych professor - can tell the difference.

A close friend of mine used hypnotherapy successfully to quit smoking cigs. She's 47 and has been smoking since 13, tired to quit MANY times, and it worked- FINALLY- with the help of a hypnotherapist. I guess the message was "I am not a smoker... I am not a smoker..." And as much as I giggle a little when faced with these alternative therapies, I can't help but agree that it was VERY effective for my friend.

I have a problem sleeping in noisy neighborhoods, other people by contrast appear not to have a problem with that though, maybe they just don't value sleep as much as I do, maybe I was born with dog's ears, I don't know. All I know is getting these kinds of people to undertstand the concept of being quite is about as worthwhile as banging my head against a brick wall.

Anyway, I was thinking about trying hypnosis as it seems the world is going to shut the fuck up any time soon, so I might have to live this problem. Would hypnosis work for that?

I actually hypnotized someone in this other post: http://boards.cannabis.com/experienc...ml#post1741432

He said he was "lulled," but I know I actually had him under my hypnotic spell. While I was in control of his mind, I made him do unspeakable things, such as act like a chicken and sing "I'm a Little Teapot." I'm kind of a dick that way, and I don't always use my powers for good. He has no memory of the horrors I put him through.

Personally I have never been hypnotised but I believe that 1 in 10 would be more logical than everyone faking it.
