Dumb question? curious..
Does everyone use the glass sheet that comes with the hps light? I was just wondering because I never really noticed that glass until today.

Are you talking about a piece of glass that slides into the reflector? If so then these are only used if you mean to cool the hood/bulb via a blower/fan.

Dumb question? curious..
Some HPS bulbs are rated (intended) to be used in open light fixtures. They have some Uv block built into the glass bulb. Somewhere on the package it should say "open fixture rated"
Other types of HPS bulbs are rated (intended) to be used inside glass covered fixtures. They don't have Uv blockers built in the bulb. The glass acts as a Uv block, and usually needs to be air cooled; like what growbe said. It should say somewhere on the package "rated for inclosed fixtures".
The same goes for Metal Halide bulbs: which have even more Uv ray.
p.s....wear your sunglasses....

my hood has a tempered glass plate ... besides being necessary for a fan-cooled lamp, it is a Safety issue, to protect you and your house from a blown lamp ... MH lamps can be really nasty, if they crack ... they can continue to function, while putting out lots of dangerous UV rays ... there is some truth to the idea that the glass absorbs some amount of light, but the safety is more important to me than a few lumens ... :smokin:

depending on your circulation and heat issues the glass can affect the ambient temps by a couple degrees.
