Have you ever thought about these? Where do you think they exist? What do you know?

I think they exist in advertising, although in America they're supposed to be illegal.

My husband adds Saturday-Night-Live-style subliminal messages (remember the old Kevin Nealon routine on the SNL newscast?) sometimes to comments he makes to me. "Maybe we should go upstairs (hot sex)?" "Maybe you could think about what's for dinner (chicken and rice)."

I need to do the same in things I say to him (turn that football game down), but I rarely think of it.

I believe they exist to...of course there are urban myths about them..for example in department stores during holiday season they are hidden in the Christmas music...saying things such as "dont steal" "buy" ..stuff like that...another is in magazines within the ice cubes of alcohol drinks with words like "sex" "fun" "happy"

I have seen that Kevin Neelan skit a few times...hilariious

There is no hard evidence that subliminal advertising works, but it's definitly out there. I had three or four books about this years ago. One was called, I believe, Subliminal Seduction. An earlier book, The Hidden Persuaders, by Vance Packard, came out in the 1950's.

Some types of subliminal advertising are illegal, but not all. Putting little drawings in ads is common, such as faces that look afraid, and other cartoon-like images. It's an interesting subject.

You're right, Breuk. I vageuly remember from my college advertising class that the FCC, which is the body that governs advertising, has specific language specifying that certain types of sexual subliminal advertising/messaging is illegal. I think one ad agency got in bad trouble--this would have been two decades or more ago--for particularly suggestive ice cubes in a liquor glass of some kind. Now with PhotoShop as advanced as it is, I'm guessing the technique must be more prevalent than ever. I find it interesting, too.
