Im thinkin with 600w HPS youd get a great yeild with no floros needed. But i think a 400w HPS youd still get a great yeild and it might help a bit to add a floro or two if youve got the room. Im kinda in the same situation, cept i only have 3 plants. Im in a space about the same size with a 400w HPS and one floro directly above my clone [1/2 way up on the other 2 plants] and it works great for me. I guess it all depends on how big you wana veg your ladies.

IMO,
Go 600watts, the footprint for a 600w is 4'x4' or 16 sqft. a 400w is 3'x3' or 9 sqft.
the other plus is a 600 watt MH or HPS produce around 90% more lumins than a 400 watt light. So that is 90% more light for 50% more electricity.

Mine costs $34.00 a month to run at 24/0 veg cycle, keep in mind this is like pluging in 6-100w incadecent bulbs, in reality that is not that much electricity. Fire hazard electricaly, not much a space heater uses twice as many watts.

Have you tried HTGsupply.com you will find a 400w for under $150, a 600w starts at around $200.00 but well worth the extra money!

the lamp wont cause any "questionable" electricty price jumps, and can even be offset through many energy saving changes around your home (wash in cold water, turn down thermostat, replace w/ flouro bulbs in commonly used lamps, list goes on)
do that, and your bill will DROP 34$

Minium room requirements ?
When I converted my house to CFL's, It blew me away at how much it saved me. I only went one month with them and my bill droped 400KWH compared to the same month a year ago, now with the 600w MH/HPS system I have, it is running very close to last years use during the same period. So it looks like nothing ever happened to the electric company and my bills have remained close to the same.
