Blondes, ready for some bad news?
People act less intelligently in their presence, French study says
From Marilyn Monroe to Paris Hilton, "blonde" has long been code for a woman who's long on looks and light on brains.
Now French researchers have found that the stereotype can actually affect mental performance.
A recent study showed that otherwise intelligent men performed below par on general knowledge tests after viewing photos of blonde women.
The real surprise? Women's performance also dipped in the tests.
The study, published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, examined people's ability to answer Trivial Pursuit game questions after viewing photos of women with different hair colors.
Exposure to blondes resulted in the lowest scores.
Thierry Meyer, joint author of the study and professor of social psychology at the University of Paris X-Nanterre, said that the study proves a general phenomenon.
"There's a decrease in performance after an unobtrusive exposure to a stereotype about people who have the reputation to be cognitively impaired," he said.
In plainer language, blondes might make people act in a less intelligent manner because the people believe â?? whether they want to admit it or not â?? that they are in the presence of someone who's not very smart.

Blondes, ready for some bad news?
yeah I believe it. there are definitely certain kinds of people that make me feel and act dumber in their presence. my parents are one.
what I will never comprehend is why a girl would artificially make her hair platinum blond. I guess it's easier to understand when you consider that intellectualism isn't as valued in todays society.
please, nobody should find this thread masogonistic. the premise does not exclusively relate to girls, but to superficial attitudes and the power of what are considered superior looks over normal mental integrity. I hate it when there's an interesting thread like this with potential and people keep making anti-chick comments and get it nuked. let's keep this one alive.

awwww....
Thats a bunch of bullshit. I kick ass at Trivial Pursuit. And I always had A's in my classes, plus i'm becoming an elementry school teacher. I think the test was flawed.
BTW i'm naturally a dirty blonde, I dye my hair platinum b/c it makes me feel pretty and my natural complexion looks dull when i'm any other color.

I'm sure you are smart, reb, but that wasn't exactly the issue. The point was the effect of blonde girls' on others. People are more likely to not access their full mental capacity in your presence. It has nothing to do with how smart you actually are.

I wonder if Hilliary Clinton will be receiving more votes due to this study? Granted, she is more of a gray, but if she can lower the IQ level of other world leaders simply by being elected maybe she isn't a bad choice after all.
