    Chronic's Revenge Grow Log #1

This is my first grow with Chronic's Revenge. I'm also going to experiment with a couple of new things during this grow, so I'm keeping it small. I will only germinate 3 seeds, with the aim of having just 1 or 2 females. There are two bubblers I will be using, one for the initial 4 weeks or so, vegging until sex is determined, then a larger bubbler for flowering. For the first time I will be going "basket-less" in both bubblers. I will post pictures of the basket-less bubblers when it gets to that point.

Here's a description of Chronic's Revenge from the Doc's website:

Chronic's Revenge was created with medicinal users in mind. A White Widow crossed with a good old country Indica , it makes for a great soaring high followed with low anxiety & deep relaxation. Rich in THC, the Revenge is served sweet from the start. Smoke it in a chalice for ultimate pain relief.

    THC Content: High
    Buzz: Indica induced
    Mix : mostly Indica
    Flowering : 56-61 days
    Height : Short
I actually started germination a couple of days ago, and have already had a little excitement, as you will see. But, since it looks like two of the seedlings will probably make it, I decided to go ahead with the grow and log. In the next message, I will post the first few days of the log, up until today. The next update after today will have pictures.

    Chronic's Revenge Grow Log #1

    Nov 16
(AM) Pre-soaked 3 seeds in about 1 inch of distilled water with 1/2-cap of H2O2 in a glass cup. This is set inside my entertainment center beside an HD receiver which is always on and gets quite warm. The temperature inside is a constant 81 degrees, and the door is always closed, so it's always dark.

    Nov 17
(AM) I got three 16-oz styrofoam cups, poked about 10 small holes in the bottom of each with the miniature screwdriver on my pocket knife. I then used one of the cups to scoop out 3 cup-fulls of perlite into a large bowl, and poured in distilled water with a cap of H2O2. Added 1/8 teaspoon of SoilMoist, to help the perlite retain a little more moisture than it normally would (similar in thought to adding a little vermiculite) and let it soak for 3 hours. I then filled the cups with the soaked perlite, scooped out with a straining spoon (the kind my mom would always serve green beans with) and put the seeds about 1/4-inch under the surface. The cups were put into a tupperware tray with about 1/2-inch of distilled water and a tad of h2o2. The tops of the cups were covered with plastic wrap to keep humidity high for the seeds. Then the tray was set on a low power heating pad attached to a timer set to 1 hour on/1 hour off. I read somewhere that alternating temps could speed germination, we'll see how this goes.

    Nov 18
The temp is averaging a low of about 73 when the heating pad has cycled off, to a high of about 78 when it's on. No lights yet. Humidity is between 35% and 45%, but higher I'm sure under the plastic wrap -- there are a couple of drops forming on the underside of the wrap on each cup so I know it's pretty humid under there.

    Nov 19
(AM) Two of the seeds have sprouted. I removed plastic wrap from those two cups. I think the combination of SoilMoist in the perlite and the alternating heating pad have definitely helped. 48 hours is a full day faster than the last seeds I germinated, which were done without SoilMoist and without the alternating heating pad. In fact, they sprouted sooner than 48 hours. I don't know exactly when because they sprouted while I was asleep, but it was somewhere between 36 and 48 hours. I should have tried only one of these two changes, because now I don't know which one is mainly responsible for the faster germination. Next time I'll have to try adding the SoilMoist but just leave the heating pad constant, then another test without SoilMoist but with the alternating heating pad. Anyway, maybe both contributed.
(PM) The other seed has sprouted, so I removed the last of the plastic wrap and the heating pad, and turned on the lights (set to 18/6). One of the initial sprouted seeds has not opened its seed casing and has fallen completely over. No green is visible on it, even between the crack in the casing. The casing doesn't look like it opened enough, it's very tightly closed. I pried it off carefully, but it cracked open like when opening a peanut, so I doubt it was ever coming off by itself. I don't think this little one will make it, which is a shame because I was hoping for 100% germination (technically I guess it did germinate, it just didn't open the casing enough to survive). The other two sprouts are showing green under the casings, which are split all the way open but still attached.

    Nov 20
(AM) DISASTER! The water beneath the cups is gone and the tray is completely dry. Did I forget to replenish the water last night??? I guess I did... The two that looked like they were doing fine last night haven't shown any growth at all. One has fallen over slightly, and the casings are still on both. I guess the seedlings dried out during the night -- how could I have let this happen, I know better than this! I gently removed the casings, got some fresh water (distilled plus a tad of h202 and one drop superthrive) and poured it into the cups, enough so that when it drained out the bottom there was about 3/4 inch in the tray. One of the two sprouts looks slightly better than the other, maybe it will make it. The third sprout, whose casing never opened enough to come off, looks pretty dead, no green at all, nothing opening up or showing any signs of life.
(LUNCH) Well, the dead one still looks dead. The other two are looking better, a bit more green and starting to open up. There's still a good bit of water in the tray, so I will leave it until this evening. When I check on them then, I will poke a couple of holes in the sides of the cups close to the bottom. It could be that the holes in the bottom aren't able to wick up any water because it's being sealed off by the rim along the bottom of the cup.
(PM) The two "live" ones, which I will call Alpha and Beta, look like they might pull through after all. Alpha is the healthiest one, and is starting to show it's first set of true leaves. Beta still hasn't spread it's initial seedling leaves, the cotyledon, in fact they are in a fairly tight ball. I think the casing membrane is still wrapped around it, constricting pretty badly. I tried as gently as possible to pry the membrane off, and it did come off. It looks like the cotyledon were constrained too much for too long and are half yellow and not full size. Another set of leaves in between them looks like they may work be working their way out. What do you know, Beta might just make it! The dead one, which I will call Delta, is pretty dead, as in doornail dead. I buried the whole thing under the perlite, said some last rites, and then watered it just in case. I'll keep watering and watching, but I doubt anything will happen. If it does, I will have to call it Dracula. I poked holes around the outside bottom of the cups for extra wicking sites, and scooped a few tablespoons of the water from the tray into the tops of the cups.

    Nov 21
(AM) Beta's cotyledon definitely look bad, but the first true leaves look like they are starting to emerge more. What's left of the cotyledon have spread fully open, and the stem looks good. Hoping for the best for Beta! Alpha looks very good. The cotyledon are starting to turn down, and the first set of true leaves is extending out more. Delta is still dead, surprise, surprise. I will take the first pictures at lunch when I check on them. I cleaned out the tray and replenished with filtered water (which has a ppm of about 60) ph'ed to 5.9. I scooped several tablespoons into all three cups over the seedlings. No nutes yet. I also made sure the water in the tray was high enough to cover the new holes in the sides of the cups along the bottom. Pictures this evening...

I took a couple of pictures during lunch. The first is Alpha, the second is Beta. The yellow on Beta's cotyledon is a result of being constricted for too long in the seed membrane, which didn't come off when the seed casing came off. The first emerging true leaves look ok (they're hard to see in this picture), so hopefully Beta will pull through with no lingering problems.

It's been a busy couple of weeks, and I haven't been able to update. Got time for a quick one:

    Day 14
Well, Beta didn't make it. Alpha is the sole survivor of this bunch, sure hope it's a girl! The first set of leaves got a bit brown on the tips at the end of the first week (still in the perlite cups), so I decided to go ahead and move it to the small bubbler on Day 7. It's now been 7 days in the bubbler, and it seems quite pleased. In the pic you can see where I pruned the brown tips off the first set of leaves when I moved it too the bubbler. It also looks like the leaves are wanting more light. I've got 3 CFLs here, one 55w and two 42w, for a total of 138w (in actual CFL wattage), equal to 550w. It's a total of 9,000 lumens in a 4-foot-square space (it's a very small closet).

Also, as you can see, I'm not using baskets in the bubbler. The hole is filled with a piece of foam insulation with a slit cut for the plant. I'm maintaining the pH between 5.9 and 6.0. Days 7-14 ppm was 400-450. Today starts 500ppm.

If you notice any issues, or have any suggestions, let me know!

i'm no expert man but i think some net pots (even home-made ones) will give the stem some added support. it doesn't need support now but when it's 3 feet tall it will. i use 9 oz plastic cups that fit into my dwc bins very nicely. come take a look
