Aluminum is a very soft and easily-oxidized metal. So is copper. NEVER smoke out of either. Aluminum oxide has been linked to Alzheimers disease, although this is something that is still under investigation. Copper is just straight up toxic.

The alloys and less easily oxidized metals used for bowls and pipes include stainless steel, brass, nickel, and I think I've even seen anodized aluminum alloy ones. These are safe because they have been treated to make the surface non-reactive.

I'm going to go start a thread in recreational about this. Anyone who would like to chime in on the subject come on over.
