if you found 40 grand would you hand it in

Thank you, Robo Scat. (I know you meant no harm! If I'd thought otherwise, you probably are smart enough to know I'd have approached the problem a bit differently.)

I appreciate everyone's efforts, when I see you make them, to reflect well on cannabis users and advocates as a civil, well-mannered, intelligent group of people. It's better for advertisers. Better for cannabis advocacy. Better for future members who might be basing their decisions on whether to join on what they see here. Better all around.

Put yourself in the shoes of the person that *LOST* that $40,000. That may be their entire lifes savings. It might be the money for somebody to keep from losing their home, it could be for *ANY* number of things. Either way, it probably represents somebody's lifes savings.

Would I turn it in??? hell yeah I would. I like being able to sleep at night.

As for those of you that would keep it, I really feel bad for your parents for the job they -didn't- do when they raised you.

I really think it depends on the situation. If I got 40grand on ebay instead of a ps3 I would keep it for sure. I would invest the whole sum into some nice mutual funds for my retirement. In 20 years that 40,000 would be around 250,000.

my parents raised me well but dude...im keeping the money.
finding that kind of cash would be too much of a blessing to pass up.
i would buy a pound of weed and then like a 5000 dollar gas card so i wouldnt have to worry about gas prices for awhile. the rest would be invested wisely.

Apparently they didn't raise you well enough.
    Sorry about your luck.

I honestly couldn't live with the guilt. If I could be certain it was from a dodgy businessman or drug money or something like that then with doubt I'd keep it. On the other hand such a serendipitous find could be at the expense of someone's misfortune, someone could have a complete breakdown or even kill themselves over a loss like that. I'd hand it in and hope that they were generous enough to give me 4 grand back.

First I'd wonder why in gods name someone was carrying around 40k in cash. I mean NO ONE uses cash these days, especially in those amounts. I'd take the money and do what the original owner of it should have done...put that stuff in the bank, then I'd go buy myself a few things I had been wanting ^^.

Anyone ever read "A Simple Plan"?

This reminds me of that book.

But damn I don't know what I would do. If I kept it I don't think I would sleep at night from the guilt. So then right now I just thought of something.

I would turn in half of it (20g) and keep the other half. Assuming no one would would go pick it up I get th 20g back. But then if someone did pick it up and proved the money was theirs I guess i would give back the rest.

This thread reminded me of Pedro Zapeta:

    Back to Guatemala, Sans $59,000

Two years ago, Zapeta was ready to return to Guatemala, so he carried a duffel bag filled with $59,000 -- all the cash he had scrimped and saved over the years -- to the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

I'm not going to go into the immigration issue at all; because it doesn't have anything to do with the thread. Besides, it wouldn't "work"; if you returned the money they'd take it from him anyway. Point being, I bring this up to present this as a hypothetical example of how you may have found $40,000.

What if Mr. Zapeta, a seemingly hard-working, innocent, humble man had somehow, accidentally left this bag next to you?...instead of the cash being apprehended by customs officials? What if Mr. Zapeta had a medical/mental condition that made him lose track of his bag? Then we're in the situation that the thread originally calls for......what do you do?

Personally, when I first saw the thread, I agreed with the majority:

WTF? Is that a question? TAKE IT!!!

Second thoughts bring feelings of guilt, and the questioning of morals......Some will continue to justify though: "How does one just lose $40k!? He deserves to lose it!"

One thing though: How many times have you lost something that you knew, and told yourself, not to lose? Car keys? Wallet? Cell phone? Plane ticket? Pink slip? Cash?

What if we were Mr. Zapeta? Just think about it. Is it really fair for the government to play "finders keepers" ?

Edit: Oh, and BTW, if I found 40k in a public place, no. I wouldn't touch that shit. Too many risks and possible scenarios. If I did, however, find 40k in some random ass place.....I'd keep it.
