Growing outdoors in New England... for zoott

I'm posting this thread for zoott, who aspires to grow some plants in NH next season.

    USDA zone 5
First frost this year was late, 29 October in the foothills of the Berkshires
    45'N latitude

So... what do locals grow outdoors?
I know that there are some locally acclimated hippieweed strains, but you can't buy seeds.

I'm going to toss Skunk#1 out there as a classic that will finish in this area.

My outdoor buddies put their stuff in the ground as started seedlings with several sets of adult leaves, or rooted clones, by July 1.

They pull males by Aug 1.

That's about where my outdoor knowledge ends.

Familiarize yourself with the basic needs of the plant- soil type and pH, fert schedules, pests and diseases. All these issues apply outdoors as well as indoors. Also be aware of the outdoor basics- covering your tracks, private vs. public property, sun exposure (morning sun is desirable), hunting seasons and areas, etc.

You WILL have to water, especially in August, when there is little rainfall.
