Since its Veterans heres a true story about one:
My Friend Cas,
A few years ago I was in the Navy and living in Japan. A lot is made about the bonds service members form and itâ??s pretty much true. I outranked him but he had been on a ship longer as I spent the first 3 years of my enlistment in another branch of the navy. He showed me how to get by on the ship, and we became real good friends. He was from NJ and joined to get away from his town were his dad was mobbed up and wanted Cas to be also. He gave a try in the navy instead and wanted to fly straight. After our first deployment we got an apartment together and chilled all the time. Thatâ??s not on some gay shit either; we always had girls and would even share them sometimes, only dude thatâ??s ever been in the room doing a girl while I was doing another girl in the same room.

Anyways we got called out to Persian Gulf on a long ass deployment. Cas never really fit with the middle chain of command, as he worked hard and would call them on their lazy bullshit when they didnâ??t. He was protected by our Division Officer because he liked the results. I also kept him out of trouble and inline when I was around. The deployment lasted 10 months and I was called away from the ship often due to my prior field of work. I got another call to go in country Iraq and l stayed in Iraq for about a month, when I returned to the ship Cas had lost a rank and had been put on shit duty grinding decks and cleaning the bilges. I found that while the Division Officer was away on leave they wrote him up on disrespect and got it sent through. People were bored and frustrated due to an extension of our deployment and took it out on the easiest target. I talked to Cas who was like fuck it; no matter what I do Iâ??ll still be a criminal so why try. I got him into working out and swimming and put the goal of switching over to a better branch of the navy, he was dedicated got in great shape and didnâ??t get into trouble. We made it home from the deployment and life seemed good, the ship was given a two week vacation, so me, Cas and couple of others got stoned as fuck for a few days with some pot we picked up in Thailand on the way back. Talk about no tolerance we were so fucking blitzed and running around Japan like madmen it was one of the most enjoyable weeks of my life. Cas also made back his rank and was doing so well the Divo put him in for an early promotion.

Then two bad things happened at once, a friend and shipmate of ours died during a training operation, and it was in a way that the one of the senior officers should have hung for it, and this was up close and personal deal, Cas was a few feet away while I was giving CPR to the dude and it affected Cas pretty bad, especially the fact the command was trying to just say it was an accident and let the Cmdr get off scott free ( Testified against this guy but never heard anything from it). At the same time a buddy of Cas was going to get busted and getting ready to get a Dishonorable. The guy and Cas had know each other for a long time and had made a promise that if one of them decided to leave the other would go with them no matter what. The guy called in the promise and even though Cas was on the way up he honored his word (maybe and Italian thing?) I got home from work and All his shit was packed up he told me he was heading back to America with this other guy and 5 minutes later he threw his shit on his back and left. I gave him a nights lead then reported him UA to the ship MPâ??s. They were all over me and thought I helped him and threatened me with loss of rank and brig time if I didnâ??t tell them where he was. Luckily I had done a lot of dicey shit for the command, and after a quick word with the Captain, weâ??re I assured him I didnâ??t help Cas get away he took care of the MPâ??s for me and I wasnâ??t harassed any more. The found his flight information and it showed that his flight went to Hong Kong they assumed that he was defecting (both guys had SCI/TS security clearances). It was just a layover to their flight to San Fran though. He wrote an email to our Divo absolving me of anything and saying that the Division had been good to him but this was something he had to do.
