Probably you are holding the hits in longer and/or taking bigger hits; since the smoke is cooler then most pipes would get it it is easier to "handle". In that sense you could possibly be getting more THC.

Please note that while this may be true, they did not go into very much detailed experimentation on the THC to tar ratio. They didn't provide any numbers which could mean that the amount of thc lost is actually very minimal but the amount of tar filtered is also very small. They also said that if they were using higher grade cannabis that the results could have been different.
Plus bongs may filter out other harmful chemicals that would otherwise be entering your lungs.
