I went to Sports Chalet today...I am not even sure where the closest R.E.I. is to me...I am thinking Rancho Cucamonga..I am not sure..looked at both packs and sleeping bags..they had some really nice packs...prices seemed to be mostly around $150..I definitely like the internal frames..sleeping bags, I will probably go with down...around 3 pounds..a price tag of around 100$.
After that, went to the library, read backpacker magazine and then sat there for 2 hours in the library reading the getaway of the John Muir trail or something..cool book..I will check it out when i find my library card.
Very cool how you finish this hike right after Mt Whitney..oh yeah, the Whitney Portal..

That would be sick. I met someone who began on the border of Mexico/San Diego and followed the Pacific Crest Trail all the way to Canada. The dude was from Squamish, Canada, and had prepared for this trip for a year. You have to go through the mohave desert, which will be challenging. Bring water, not just a purifier.
I am all for this... I hope you guys do it and have a great time. It should be awesome!

i went last august and it was too late in season
the meadows were brown already and the flowers were few
snow was gone but the weather was perfect
id like to go again in mid-late july
it is very easy to get a permit
two maildrops of food and a couple hundred bucks
it will be so worth it

man you know it, we'd make it through no problem.
good peoples, good buds, good environment,
no way in hell this could not be a cool ass trip
its usually not as fun when its easy anyway!
plus we'd have each other to kick each other in the ass to keep going
you thinking of bringing your son? that would be cool too
I hope he wouldn't mind hanging out with 3 stoned heads the entire trip though
I did order that GPS geo, I've just been wanting one so bad,
I couldn't resist! It should be here by either tomorrow or thursday
I say we go find that cache with my new GPS
