Start applying to colleges in California, and look into all forms of financial aide. If you feel you are mentally ready for that kind of move, and mature enough to handle it, go for it.

if you got a steady cash flow then come on down
to live just ok you will need like a grand a month maybe a lil more
you will need a car and rent aint cheap
    i am barely getting by
if i lived in another state id have way more money to spend

if you could manage to live on campus
or get your parents to help you out
you really should come out west

new york sucks...no offense to new yorkers i just hated it their

I'm originally from Cali -born and raised. My suggestion would be to go to school in NY and use your junior and senior year to network and get yourself set-up in Cali. The cost of living in CA is high .. high .. HIGH. Once you get out there and get dependent, you could find yourself between a rock and a hard place (robbing Peter to pay Paul).

Since you have family out there, pay them a visit when you can so you can at least scope out the area and figure out where you may want to plant roots. That will also give you a chance to get a real idea of what it will cost for you to live there.

    Good luck to ya!

California is expensive, but I think New York is probably just as high, from what I've heard. One difference is that in California you need a car, in New York I guess you don't.

The best thing is always to try out a new place before you move there, of course. So if you could visit your relatives for awhile and really check it out, that would be a good plan.

It's been awhile since I got out of college, but I think most of the CA state colleges and UC universities cost a lot more for out-of-state residents than for CA residents, and it takes a few years to be considered a resident.

Also, there are a lot of differences in CA up and down the state, and there are a lot of different lifestyles. Might be a good idea to travel and visit SoCal, SF Bay area, Northern California, Central Coast, Sierras --- its all different and all great in it's own way.

For the 1st 30 years of my life, New York was my home and all I could do was think about getting away from there and moving to California because I hated the weather {and the accent, I think New Yorkers sound retarded after living here for 14 years} with all my heart. There was nothing worse than walking to school when it was 0ºf outside or getting out of the shower in August and by the time I dried off my body from top to bottom, I would have to start over because of the humidity.
Needless to say, I hate N.Y. even though I was born and raised there and will never ever set foot in that place again. N.Y.C. stank like shit & piss compared to Los Angeles's San Fernando Valley where I live now or the Pacific coast where I play.
Not only does it smell better here even though the smog is worse but, weed is legal.
The only thing New York has on Los Angeles is the water, our water here in L.A. is straight up clorox bleach and will give you skin conditions or dandruff or both.
Nevermind the fact that food here is cooked with that nasty ass water and makes the food taste like ass too.
The cost of living here is rediculous but if you can play the game, you can make it here. I live pretty comfortably in Studio City in a bungalow with my wife and our neighborhood is quiet except for my motorcycles.

If you are tired cold weather and shoveling snow or staying inside because it is raining again and the humidity level and the temperture are both fighting for the triple digit spot, then So Cal may be the place for you.
