My brain is going to explode

    in a typical E&F system..

Would I be able to have net pots on the top of a 40 gallon reservoir, without buckets separating the roots of the individual plants, and not have problems removing males?

I am in the process of trying to figure out if I should put buckets inside of the 40 gallon flood tray, or just cut holes on the lid for the net pots to go into...

My concern is that the males roots will become entangled with the females, if there were only net pots on top of the lid.

if you have no way to seperate the roots then they will get tangled and when you come to get rid of the males it could damage other roots or leave plant matter in the reserviour. if you dont use buckets, you could always make some kind of seperator that is temporary to be removed after sexing. but buckets are probably easier. then after sexing you can just remove them

    hope this helps

It would be much easier to remove the males if the plants were separated. It's not impossible however. You would probably end up with some dead roots in the medium and water, but until the end of the grow that probably wouldn't hurt. Roots will get tangled up, but you can separate them as best you can, and the ones you can't get, you can cut off with scissors. This is not optimal of course. It could, temporarily at least, slow down growth of the ones who's roots you cut. Overall the system could work and you would end up with weed.

It's really best if you are starting from seeds, to sex the plants before putting them in a system. Knowing that you are starting with females solves so many problems.
