You made no mention of light cycle change. after changing to 12/12 it will be 7 to 10 days before you can tell.

we were told to start them as 12/12 but now that i've researched a bit more into it maybe we shudve started 18/6. what do you think? but they are growing really well so far the leaves are about 10-15cm long. i think it might be a little early to tell and i'm just being impatient.

If you grew them from seed you need to wait until the internodes are not across from each other before you send you plant into flower which would be the 12/12 cycle. This can take anywhere from 1.5 -2 months, most people veg thier plants for close to two months before sending a plant from seed to flower.
You really should read up more on this before jumping in. Take a look at stinkyattic's sig, she has some great links for newbies for all stages and you will be able to learn at the sametime.

Is it always as cut and dry as the picture you show or does the female sometimes have ball like things before the pistils come out?

thT Picture is a great demonstartion of what the sexual parts will look like DURING FLOWERING
the females are easy, theres bigwhite hairs. if they aint there during flowring, think twice.
males show a bit later, but theyll become obvious after a few ays of first appearing
