I see this question a lot, and I've been thinking about starting a thread to detail the step by step process for going legal in California for a hopeful sticky. Chances are I will forget to do this this weekend, I forget to do a lot of things hehe...but it would be helpful to have a clear step by step guide to clear the confusion with California's, (and possibly other states), medical marijuana process.

But until I get that guide up, the short answer is to ask the doctor you see for anxiety and/or insomnia if they will write on paper that they recommend you use marijuana to treat the conditions they are treating you with. If they won't do that for you, you can see a pot doctor such as ACC SoCal, or any others you can find here: Physicians - CaNORML

Going the latter method, (pot doctor), usually will cost you about $150 for your first visit and is not covered under any health insurance companies that I know of, going with your current doctor would be the cheapest and most recommended route. Legally, all you need is a piece of paper from your doctor stating he recommends you to use medical marijuana, nothing else is required under California law. Most Co-ops will call your doctor before allowing you in, so don't try faking it because that won't work :P

I want to add my own personal preference as an IE patient. Despite the fact that the desert co-ops are ridiculously high, the small increase in price seems worth it compared to the ridiculous drive, (especially right now in the holiday shopping season), to the LA area. There was a good one in Indio, but they moved...the other one I know of is in Palm Springs, they seem to have consistent quality which is my primary concern.
