Any other stoners of science?
I have been studying chemistry behind THC and other cannabinoids lately and was trying to compute average dosages of different cannabinoids we consume through the magical erb from Jah.
Most commercial mid-grade is usually around 2-5% THC. If one smokes a 1 gram fatty to themselves, that would be between 20-50 mg of THC. However, I have read that some THC is lost if you store in prescription bottles (bc they are plastic) and THC is of course lost from the application of the lighter flame as well as many other variables affecting the amount actually ingested.
If anyone has any info on how much THC is lost from different variables as well as info on active dosages and their corresponding effects, that would be super.

Props for you for looking up the chemistry and science behind it.
All I know is that if you should always grind up your stuff. Chemistry in action- if it's ground up, there is more surface area for a reaction to occur... meaning you conserve a lot of your marijuana while achieving the same high you'd have smoking 2 bowls of ungrinded stuff.
Shit im so high

Thanks for the info... it makes perfect sense, I just had not thought about that before. I guess I thought, since it is all burning it wouldn't matter...
I'm going to try to find out that info sometime...

I don't understand the logic behind grinding up your marijuana when it all eventually burns anyway, and if it's going to your lungs, why wouldn't you get just as high as smoking the same amount, just ground up?

I think the only difference is that you can fill up a bowl more, like if you grind it you'll have smaller bits to fill it up with, thus having more thc and getting a better high.

Regarding 'joints'.
The scientific studies I've read suggest that around 50 percent of the THC is lost during smoking due to the combustion process which destroys and/or vaporises the THC.
In addition, there is also 'exhalation' to consider.
i.e. when you toke not all the THC in the smoke is absorbed by the bronchioles in the lungs, and therefore is just exhaled and lost, however, accurate percentage quantities are (for obvious reasons) difficult to accurately quantify.
I've been researching ingested quantities recently to compare dosage and effects so I'll post up some info on that as well when I've finished compiling it.
Great question! I'll be interested to see what other information gets posted.
Cheers

Grinding will (generally) provide a more consistent smoking medium, so basically your herb should burn at a more constant rate and should allow air to pass through evenly which means the vapourization of THC would be greater overall.
Think of it as more efficient burning and processing - just like when you chew food
To be honest I doubt you will find many studies with decent information - a lot of them have been conducted with bias (like the chimps smoking weed - basically being oxygen deprived and calling it brain damage from weed - meh) so it would be tricky regardless.
What is interesting is the difference between smoking methods and vapourization - there are some good Gas chromo figures there

Volcano Vaporizer Study
Also available (full study) as a PDF here:
http://www.canorml.org/healthfacts/j...ingervapor.pdf
They report up to 61% THC extraction with one run of the vapourizer - obviously this would be higher if the weed was re-vaped again, as an Volcano owner will attest!Minds are like parachutes, they both work best when open.

Delta 9, thanks for the info.
I am glad you are doing similar studies, Flame, look forward to working with you.
Hopefully, this thread will stay alive [BUMP!] and we can post and discuss our findings here.

i heard that when you burn cannabis with a lighter you lose THC because its not burning at the exact temperature that weed burns at but rather burns how ever hot the lighter is meaning some thc isnt burnt properly etc, and i heard that if the smoke has to go through something e.g filter tips or water in a bong, thc is lost cos it attaches it self to the roaches etc
