    Do any of you DJ?

I've always loved music but I never tried to actually learn it and make music. I have 2 guitars that I used to play, but I haven't in ages. I've also always been very interested in turntables, and almost bought a set but I talked myself out of it (years ago). Recently I've been listening to a lot of electronic music and my mind is racing with ideas of buying turntables.

The idea of having a good setup is wonderful, but the price is ridiculous. If I wanted to get something worth buying, it would cost me a little over 1,000$ to get it all setup.

Have any of you guys invested in DJing as a hobby? My problem is, I probably will never use the turntables for a real DJ job, just for fun. That sounds like some very expensive fun, you know? There are also CD turntables that sound cool. You can scratch digital media. It would be amazing to have vinyls, but cds are almost free. Making my own cds with beats and samples with a good cd turntable setup could be incredible.

Anywho, enough ranting. Do you DJ?

I feel you dude. It's like I've developed an obsession. It's all I think about, even when I'm high (which isn't normal). I could get a good little bundle on ebay for a good price if I took the time to win. However I'm not quite sure if it's worth it. I mean, once you buy the expensive turntables, mixer, amp, speakers, headphones, cables, computer software, vinyls, etc. it gets crazy expensive!

i fuck around with a bit of scratching myself, in fact every saturday night im out at a local hop with a handful of other djs and its a damn fine show....when it comes to getting serious, ditch the digital media as a sole source...trust me vinyl is worth the extra bit of cash when it comes to sound quality on the tables after all thats what they were made for!

I just can't decide if it's worth it as a hobby. I'm a huge video game nerd. Most of my middle school and high school career was spent behind this computer playing tfc, cs, starcraft, wow, swg, ffxi, etc. I'm just a huge computer gamer that wants a new hobby, yet I the hobby I'm obsessed about is the most expensive hobby in the world. I made the hour drive to my mom's place today to pick up my 2 ibanez guitars so I could start playing them again. But in the mean time, I'm driving myself insane about turntables!

    What do you think?

My brother and I use to DJ back in the day 15 years ago or so but things have changed so much I wouldnt even think about doing it anymore. He still DJ's currently and has just about everything you can imagine. He doesnt use turntables anymore but uses these Denon CD players that do everything. Just the two turntables set him back almost 2 G's. He spins at several clubs here and was just in the Pepsi Dj competition. He didnt win but got to know Kanye West plus a shitload of women.

    In a way Yes.

Production is a form of DJing. Although I don' really do any scratching and only have 1 turntable, I'm still a DJ.

Hip-Hop production is all about taking old vinyl and tranforming it into something totally different from the original record.

And thats what I do! Its called Sampling.
