I think that you are trying to write from the head, rather than the heart, WFF.
It doesn't work like that, dude - as you probably know

I dabble in dark poetry, because it's where my head is, but I still write from the heart.

Just start with a simple feeling, then expand upon it; for example.
"I drove my car moved along the road"
expanded
"The car kicked up trails of dusty discontent, passing trees and fields as it went, and only the clouds in the sky, bear witness to the tears that I cry."

I like your verse alot too, NWM...pain can be the greatest inspiration - bizarre
