    I second that.

I have some friends that are in frats...they used to be really smart and cool individuals. Then....something happened to them

it's like they replaced the blood in their brains with alcohol

it all depends on the fraternity that you join. find the right group of guys, and your college years will be wonderful. i was in a frarternity, and it was great. every campus has greeks that are d-bags, nerds, drinkers, rich kids and so forth, the one i was in had everything from farmers to vietnamese we were a diverse bunch, but we had a blast.

find the right one and you wont regret it, but if you dont find the right group of guys, dont do it. and don't let them sweet talk you, dont rush into one, hang out with them for at the very least a semester.

Higher4hockey thanks for stopping the bloodletting on frats! I was in a frat and I don't regret it. I met a lot of good people that I am still friends with today. The college I went to was kind of "clicky" for a lack of a better word as many girls wouldn't give you the time of day if you weren't in a frat. I know that's kind of shallow of them but hell in was college and they didn't know any better and they were hot. We had a lot of socials with the sororities and it was a blast.

Not only did we party and chase tail but we also did some work in the community so we did some good too. You can easily be a leader and not a follower if you join a frat.

I've got mixed feelings about fraternities. There's the service ones, the social ones, and the professional ones. You can probably find a group of dudes that suits your style.

I used to hang with the dudes at ATG house at UMass, it was the fraternity for the Stockbridge School of Agriculture guys and sure, there were some total misogynistic pricks around- I got smacked on the head with a dick at an arboriculture club meeting that was being held at the house, and the smacker got his ASS chewed out by the fraternity president right there in front of everyone. You get one in every crowd, lol, but don't judge based on any single member. Mostly these guys were brought together by the need for professional networking and academic support.

Anyway good luck. You HAVE to ask yourself first what you want to get out of the experience. Just like ANY club you might join!

I believe that true friends do not haze others in order to initaite them. They just accept them as who they are. Sure you could meet some kool people, but you can do that anywhere. You are asking advice, this says to me you aren't fully commited to joining a fraternity, otherwise you would not care what was said and you would join regardless. I would suggest sticking to what makes you feel comfortable.

Greek life is huge at my school. I actually have 2 roomates who are pledging right now. I've met some of their pledge brothers and most of them are really cool but some are complete dickheads. if you do decide to pledge don't expect alot of free time.
