    The Today Sponge

    Hello girls!
ok my bff and i went to the pharmacy to see what was available for otc contraceptives besides the condom. I'm allergic to latex and most plastics which include condoms, rubber gloves, dishwashing gloves, some sponges and some fragrances. if i come into contact with any of these things my face burns, my hands and feet itch and i get a mild swelling of my hands.. so obviously i cant use condoms.. so i decide to try out the sponge till i can get a docs appointment and get on the pill again.. i work 5 days a week away from home and have no way to get to the doc till i wrangle a day off from work during the week, and i dont want to wait to get me some. so according to the pamphlet, which is highlarious by the way, said its like 75% effective if used correctly... has anyone used these before? i havent, this would be my first time and im skeptical... like it works for 24 hrs, and it says it allows spontaneity, but how much really? my biggest question that the pamphlet didnt answer was if it has a taste... hahaha ok so ideally, i would insert well before my guy and i get going, but when he goes down on me, i want him to taste me, not sermicide.. ya dig? lol any one have any info?

Huh I thought those were off the market.

    75% effective?
Sorry, I'm not taking that chance! Those stats SUCK.
If you've got allergies, the spermicide in the sponge might set you off- spermicide makes me itch too.

You can get latex-free condoms btw.

I just love that episode of Seinfeld...

    I'm sorry, you're just not sponge-worthy...

One of my goals in life is to be "sponge worthy" at all times.

Believe it or not they were brought back by popular demand in 2003 Stinky. I don't see the point in using them. They aren't 100% in the birth control arena, and they don't do diddly-shit to protect you from STDs.

yeah when we saw the sponge on the counter we had a whole conversation about that episode of seinfeld.
yeah those stats do suck, but i figure combined with like withdrawal, the odds get a little bit better. yeah about the std's youre right, but i HATE condoms, latex free or not, and its not like im going around fucking everyone in sight. Id honestly rather not have sex, than use a condom. But anywhoo, i didnt even use em cause things fizzled out with the guy i was supposedly seeing anyway so its all good, and yeah, what stinky said, im gonna try out the spermicide on my skin before i do anything cuz i might be allergic to it, and i would like to find out before i put that thing anywhere near my.....hehe

For a sensitivity test like that, the back of the leg at the bend or the inner arm will probably work best. It has to suck to be allergic to both latex and plastic. I'm allergic to latex and that's bad enough, you add plastic to that and its mind blowing because everything that is made latex-free for people with allergies is usually plastic. I don't know how the hell you cope. I know you can get silk based condoms from Europe but from what I've read they are even less reliable than the sponge.

You could combine the sponge with the basal temperature method. If used with care, it could be a good solution for a committed adult couple. You would significantly reduce your chances of getting pregnant by combining those two.

(I wouldn't recommend it for a gal in a casual relationship or who is too young to be a parent.)
