I've got one seed in a jug of water and the root has actually started showing, but its only showing like the side of it curling out of the seed... its not coming out point first. That's a good question about whether or not to plant yet...I've never had a root emerge, but still have the tip stuck in the shell. I'd probably wait a little bit longer if it were mine...but as long as your soil is kept moist (not soggy), it will probably come out on its own there, too.

As for which way to plant...I always put the seed in taproot down. Though, I really don't think that it matters much either way. Gravity will direct the taproot downwards, which will in return force the seedling up and through the top of the soil, regardless of how it's placed in there to begin with. I just always figured that there would be less demand on the emerging sprout if the root were already facing in that direction to begin with. Just don't bury it too deeply, or it may not be able to produce enough energy to break the surface.
