you need to find a way to completely seal off your room so that the light can't get out (or in) because come flowering time, you are not going to want ANY light at all getting to your plants. Is there a window in your room that is letting light out? I'm not sure why you would be doing this

i have the doors open during the veg because of the heat

during the flowering when plants are asleep i'll shut the doors

    im guessing this will work

if not i have other methods

im growing in a wardrobe in my bedroom

my bedroom has a window and it's winter so keeps my plant at the correct temp

i also have the inside covered in mylar diamond sheeting

get some im getting amazing results

To answer your original question, it depends. What color are your CFL's? (ie, warm, cool,) A HPS isn't the best thing for vegging but it will work. Cool white (the blue looking ones) are best. Its not the best situation at all. Ideally you want some ventilation in there especially to cool down that HPS during flowering. What are your temps running in there?

    days hps is 70 - 83

    nights cfl 73-78

    cfl is blue 6400

    hps is yellow grolux

nights flowering no light no heat so i can seal it by closeing the doors

so maybe i should just use cfl for veg and hps for flower then?

    that would solve original question

    any ideas?

Yes, thats what I do. I use my CFL's for vegging because I find that my plants fill out more and get a bit bushier and not so tall. Recently, I did something I'm against and thats vegged 4 plants with my HPS due to lack of space in my veg cab. Thus far, I'm seeing that they are more stretched than usual (I grow this strain regularly so I know what to look for) and they sidegrowth seems to have weaker stems (thinner)

In theory, you should be ok just closing the closet door at night when the lights are off. A ventilation system would be ideal, however if thats not possible just make sure you remember to shut the door on time or else your plants will get an improper light schedule and you could find yourself ending up with hermies.

    what w are your cfl's

    makes sense the strechin part

cause im also using cfl's that should reduce that a bit

    thanks for the advice

i also use a fan occasionally to stenghen the stems

am i right in saying mj when sleeping require alot less oxygen? ventilation

My CFL's are all 100 watt equivalent which is I think 23 watts each. I have 9 of them, pluse 3 flourescant tubes at I believe 18 watts each.

Using the fan to strengthen the stems is a very good idea.
And as for plants sleeping, its the same as you and I. We still breathe when we are sleeping, so plants do as well, only at a reduced rate, just like us. So yes, ventilation is important even when the lights are off. Some will say its not, but I've always kept my ventilation system on 24/7.
