Done it- no problem. Root/shoot ratios and media/biomass ratios are differant in hydro.

Have finished three footers in 4" blocks NFT- many, many times.

Used to keep my moms in 6" Cultilene- worked like a charm. 3' ain't nothing- if I didn't get in there to mow for a week or two, they'd make 5'.

Biggest problem is stuff falling over as the block loses weight/ dries out. In NFT rig, blocks fit pretty tightly into rails.

Looks like I'm picking up an Omega- based on 3"X3" X2.5" grodan. They'll finish at 2.5".

Might hang on to it, might flip it- not sure.
