Wow- thanks for all the opinions, but guess what? Seems likewe were all wrong; 24 hours after my last post the "bud" had split and produced 2 lovely feelers (Thats what they look like to me anyway). I'm not sure if it's relevant, but each emerging pistil was accompanied by a pair of leaves. One things for sure, the 2 plants are very different in appearance and my other gal has not exhibited similar buds. Still, it's a load off my mind- would have been the ultimate irony if I'd gone ahead, plucked all the buds off and the stress had hermied the plant
