I would have taken my chances with a good lawyer... Its hunting season, isn't it a normal thing to carry a shotgun during hunting season? The most they could have done was ticket you for not wearing hunter orange and hunting without a license, like 500 dollars total.... unless of course he was actually tending to the plants. Thats the best thing about growing on state land/etc, they can't tie it to you.
