You can use a pipe in the same way as the Ubie... just hold the flame 1/2" to 1" away from the bowl while inhaling and move it closer until you see the herb turn brown but not catch fire. I used to like the ubie until I realized it "automates" what is done with a pipe easily enough. Plus the ubie is a pain b/c you have to keep refilling it.

Either way (pipe or ubie) you have to do it indoors because you need a consistent heat stream coming off the flame. (you can't have any wind at all blowing it around).
