I was wondering how much marijuana would you have to have in order for the police to beam your shit? Does it have to be large amounts? Or does it have to be a living plant? Or...? And what are laws on and the chances of them actually doing that?

Well, it's actually not picking up the marijuana. The "beam" which is actually a infrared recepticle, picks up on the heat generated of the light bulbs used in growing the green. And the police also can look at your electric bill, to see if the energy used in prior months is greatly lower than that of recent months.
If you have like 1-4 plants, probably not a big deal. More like a huge operation like 50+ plants. Possibly less than that.

From my understanding the IR beam cannot penetrate the house and scan inside. They can only measure heat loss through the structure. So if.... one house in neighbourhood is lit up like a candle under an IR sweep it's pretty obvious.
I would think attic grows would be more susceptible to helicopter scanning.
No expert so don;t take my word for it...

Its illegal to do IR beam scans in the US however its legal in canada. You can buy blocking paper which will prevent them being able to detect you.

Its my understanding in the U.S. a flyover is legal but a fly over using FLIR (forward looking IR) requires a warrant because this is not plain sight. This info was told to me by a police officer.

Is FLIR the same thing used to detect outdoor grows?
I've heard weed gives off a different heat pattern than surrounding vegetation.

Yes, each plant gives off different Thermal IR signatures, especially cannabis in the fall. But this is only readable with still photography, really. FLIR IS NOT USED TO DETECT PLANTS FROM THE AIR. THis is a common misconception. FLIR is used primarily to see if a house or structure is emitting abnormal heat from the basement etc. What the bear in the air is looking for is:
1. rows of green where they shouldn't be. A row of green in some brush or out of place is a sore thumb.
2. Water lines
3. dead trees or brush cleared by man, not diesease. A patch of clearing in the woods or next to a forest will peak their curiosity.
4. trails- easier to spot from the air than you think. You may not see a trail heading into some arbitrary woods, but they will. Think of a carpet. run your hand across nice carpet, making it stand up. Then run your finger over the same carpet in the opposite direction. At carpet level it is hard to see the distinct line, but above it, it is clear. Trails get more peopel busted than anything else in outdoor grows.
5. FLIR- heat signatures given off by people tending their garden. if they find your garden, and it is big enough, they may sit on it and wait for you to come back. This is where you will have trouble with FLIR as it can see through the darkest night. If you are being chased through the woods, and you suspect they have FLIR, find some water, body of water of some kind that is manageable. Get in it and float/swim away gently. This is the only way I have seen FLIR beaten. I am ex law enforcement and we chased a guy who jumped in a big lake, choppy water confused the FLIR mage and he exited the lake on one of the banks we weren't gazing at and took off. Never saw him again.

How much of a boost of electricity does it take for the electric company to notice. i only run a 1000w sunmaster and 6" exhaust fan, is this enough or is it more like big commercial grows of multiple
lights?
