You ask the question "where did you get that impression?", like im stupid, when you dont even realise that German cars are limited. Look at the specs of any new Audi, BMW and Mercedes and you will see non of the top speeds are above 155MPH.
No, if I was trying to insinuate that I thought you were stupid, I would come right out and say it. However, there are American cars that have either mechanical or electronic limiters on them as well. They are quite easy to bypass, as long as they are sold with the limitations, thats all anybody cares about.

I know I shouldnt but it gives me a good adrenaline buzz, and is easier to do than other things which would do the same. The fastest I have ever gone in a car was 120 Mph with just me in the car.
