Hi, I am a relatively new member. I have checked out many cannabis sites before choosing this one because it is ,in my opinion the best on the net. I looked for a site that was intelligent, wasn't full of teenager wanna-bes, and relatively secure. I personally feel that users should show some kind of maturity when interacting on a controversial topic rather then arbitraily give a member "bad" rep points because they don't agree with thier point of view, facts, or political stance. This happened to me by ,from reading the other member's posts and profile, a 19 yo, very immature member that didn't even participate in the debate. I realise that there is always someone that will abuse an otherwise good system, I know that it would be impossible to police every post, but I also feel that this should not be used a "weapon" to diminish anothers status because you don't agree with what they voice, very unamerican. I hope that you take this in the spirit in which it is offered. This is a great site and I'm glad I joined. thank you for letting me vent.

good stuff; I agree w/ you in the sense that individuals might not feel comfortable being totally honest with their opinions because they fear bad rep points, which somewhat defeats the purpose of internet anonymity. But at the same time, I find the rep thing pretty fun and I don't know if unworthy reasons for giving bad rep can be regulated, as you said. I find if I'm going to offer a counterpoint on something, I do in a carefully nonpartisan way, such that I can deliver my thoughts but not make the other guy feel like I'm opposing him. I try to make people feel like we're discussing what is right, not merely who is right. I generally include a point of agreement along with my points of disagreement.

To all the members that loaded me up on rep points, I appreciate it, my purpose wasn't to solicit points, but thank you for that. I know that it is next to impossible to police who posts what, I do think that those who choose to use the rep points to "get back" at an opinion, or post because they must feel that is the only way they can intimidate and stifle another member and satisfy thier frustration that they could not do by actually debating what they disagree with is immature and counter productive to why the rep system exists.

perhaps if a person got neg rep for reasons other than rule breaking, they could report it and possibly get it reversed? If you wanted to be hardcore maybe at that point the mod or whoever could send a neg rep or other message to the original ill-founded neg rep giver (unless it'd create too much work; I don't know how often unwarranted neg rep points are given).

Wickerbill, we mods don't have the ability to look into people's reputation comments they're receiving, but when we get instances of "rep abuse," which consists of people trolling others' rep functions and leaving hostile or inappropriate comments there, we very much want to hear about that and ask that you touch base with us via email (our addresses are in our profiles) and copy the exact comment and rep-abuser member name so we can see who's doing that. We had an example recently of a long-time member using the reputation system to call people names that he knew full well wouldn't be allowed on the boards in print because it would be considered an instance of a flaming insult and break the rules. Interestingly, it's considered the same thing when it's done through the rep system. Once someone had shown us what he'd been doing, we took care of the problem.

If it's any reassurance, we mods feel the effects of rep-trolls, too. It is indeed one of the drawbacks of a rep system, or an online discussion forum itself, that it sometimes encourages the less-than-courageous types who don't have the cojones to leave an open objection on a thread in which they disagree to take a more cowardly passive-aggressive approach and voice their displeasure through the rep system. It's perfectly fine for someone not to agree with any of us. In fact, I rather enjoy it when that happens. But it certainly does say a lot about character and backbone when the disagreeing party hasn't been a part of the conversation with which they've disagreed in the first place.

Anyway, I feel your pain. I'm sorry that happened to you. If you need any one of us mods to look in the problem in more detail, we'll certainly be happy to. Flaming insults are flaming insults no matter how they're conveyed.

Sorry to dig up an old thread but I got a question... How do you give rep points to other members? I haven't figured this out yet. Thanks :stoned:
