Why/how did he take cuttings if he didnt know the sex ?!

Sexing plants my friend has just placed 5 cuttings of his plants that he doesn't know the sex of under a 12/12 light cycle, he was wondering if these cuttings were left to there own devices would they eventually produce seeds, presuming there are males and females?
