I personally don't think that LED lights will ever have a place in cannabis growing....... maybe as a secondary lighting source but never as a primary.

I'm going to have to dissagree. Not only are they the future of grow lights, but lights in general. They are getting brighter and cheaper all the time. I understand that at this time it would cost a great deal to have an LED setup that would do any good, but that will soon change. There are one watt LEDs that are the proper blue spectrum and red spectrum. Unfortunately they are about $10 each in quantity, within a few years those will be $0.50, and a 10 watt will be $10. At least that's what the experts from Sony and Philips in my LED class are saying.

You might be right, in the future. But as of now.... I just don't think that it is cost effective to have a proper set up that you would need. To tell you the truth I would love to have a led set up in the future but only if it really was worth it. Thanks for the links though I think that's great info for people who haven't checked out the concept yet. :thumbsup:

No problem, glad to help. And you are right about the money. I'm guessing an LED settup for one plant, to do any good, you would need to spend about $2500 just for LEDs. That will soon change.

LEDs are the future. I have been experimenting with them with a lot of plant species (not for growing my favorite plant though) for the last year in multiple settings. The problem with most "LED grow light" out there is the limitation in their spectrum. People who designed these lamps are focusing only on the absorption spectrum of chlorophyll and it's a big mistake. RED and BLUE should compose 70% of the lamp spectrum, but providing some white light with a complete spectrum is also important.

LEDs are definitively the future of lighting in general, including horticulture. Their efficiency is increasing every year by about 20% and the price are going down even faster. So it's only a matter of years before the white LEDs beat the best HPS out these in term of Lumen / watt with reasonable pricing. Concerning pricing, always keep in mind that LEDs will last more than 50,000 hours. That's 11 year at 12h per day. In term of "plant Lumen" or "PAR" per watt, some LEDs are already beating HPS lamps. A lot of light from an HPS is "wasted" (in heat / infrared, UV) and a main part of their spectrum is in the yellow / green region that is perceived as really bright in our eyes, but not the most efficient for plants photosynthesis. Lumen is really a poor measure for the plant grow potential of a lamp.

I haven't read this anywhere else, but I believe you are correct. Been thinking the same thing. How did you come up with 70%?

Correct. Everyone cries Lumens! Lumens! But this is only what we see. You need to measure what plants see. This measurement is Radiant Flux, not Luminous Flux.

i have installed many leds in my xbox. they are very bright!! All i can remember is that they were 15,000 mcd per led. I have 8 under my center jewell and is blinding bright if you look straait at it. even in bright daylight my xbox shines on the ceiling and the walls. sorry i cant post a pic here though. not enough posts
