I think they are very handy for IM and SMS, I use them commonly in both. I try not to use them so much in my writing on the forum, or anywhere that I feel I have the time to write in full for that matter. I really do prefer reading peoples posts in full, but if they don't it's no big deal. So whilst I feel abbreviations can be a pain in the ass, they are also extremely handy and ideal for certain situations.

Bird Girl, congratulations for escaping the predatory ad game. That is exactly the commercial that spawned this thread! It is a Cingular commercial, and I am switching carriers because of it...so it was not so effective on me

I cannot stand it when ad campaigns humiliate seniors (or adults in general) by supposing they would ever by as idiotic as teenagers (some are, I know).
Rapping grannies especially piss me off (with the possible exception of the one from The Wedding Singer). Dogs in tutus...anybody speaking like Snoop Dogg who is not actually Snoop themselves...any commercial that portrays adults as being perpetually square in order to extract $$$ from them by selling them some device makes me want to puke blood. It is bad enough that advertising is aimed almost entirely at the young, but when they try to switch it around on the grown-ups...:wtf4:I do not care what you do to a telephone. It will never be cool. Those Blue Tooth earpieces...forget about it. Every time I see somebody wearing one I want to smack it out of their ear. I wish somebody would invent a word that worked as well as "gay" to describe a scene like that, but that did not offend homosexuals at the same time...but until they do, there is nothing gayer* than wearing one of those electric toothbrushes in your ear.
*Note to practicing homosexuals, or those considering that perfectly respectable lifestyle: My apologies for using the term gay to describe something that is obviously ridiculous. I totally support the rights of individuals to practice homosexual sex. It is only the self-important, big money, Eurotrash, fashion bullshit that often, not always, but most often goes with it that I cannot stand.
