i always figured that special effects should be there to enhance the plot and characters, not to replace them.
to kill a mockingbird (one of the greatest films of all time)
12 angry men (it's been on a lot lately and i'd forgotten what a great film it was)
the haunting (the '63 film, not that '99 special effects tripe)
any monty python flick (silliness at its best)
2001 (classic and ahead of its time)
the exorcist (if you saw it when it came out, nothing more needs to be said)
mc clintock (the best of the old school westerns)
a clockwork orange (was i the only one that laughed the whole way through?)
sybil (not sure why, i just really dug the flick)
one flew over the cuckoo's nest
casablanca (bogart and bergman at their best)
....an incomplete list, but i'm a bit buzzed and i think i'll watch a movie.
i just have to say this........
i hate "it's a wonderful life"

Trainspotting is my top pick - I've watched it dozens of times, and it just gets better every time. I'm also big into historical stuff, so Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, Troy and such always attract me - as long as they have epic architecture or big battles, I'm down.
