Ok it is beta-finished, just doesn't look nice yet. I bought a wooden round cup with an oversize lid, made of balsa, at a crafts shop. I cut the cup down to about 1/2" tall. I used 3/4" brass screws, which i installed from the outside-in. I made sure that the screws on one side of the grinder did not come into contact with the screws on the other side.

However, the balsa wood was too light and weak, it was almost weaker than the herb itself. So I got some lignum vitae (heaviest wood in the world), made a couple of handles for either side, and I screwed those on from the inside.

Took me about 1.5hrs to make, and it works GREAT. The fact that they are screws with sharp serrated edges makes it function much better than some of the commercial grinders I have used.

I'm trying to make one myself out of wood and nails, but I need the layout of the pins. A perfectly aligned picture would be good, so I can just trace it onto my medium. A scanner would also work.
