The concept of a draft is supposed to be the way you envision it, but history says different. In the Civil War a person could pay $300 ( a lot of $$$ in the 1860s) to be excused of his military obligation. In Vietnam you could get a college deferment (sometimes 5 like Dick Cheney) or join the national guard or reserves or have political pull (like W on both counts) to get out of dodging bullits. The guard & reserve didn't deploy to 'Nam. So who fights? The poor & lower middle class just like almost every war in US history. Thank you for your service in desert storm glad you made it back.
