A prophylactic application of Nair didn't prevent infestation, I see.

You will have to go for the big guns. A firecracker wrapped in moldy cheese should do the "trich"....

Yes. It's definitely a spider mite.
I suggest spraying your plant with Hartz advanced care 4 in 1, and put one of these around the stalk...
