Ive heard things about using a cup of water with a little bit of sugar in it produces a small amount of CO2. Is this true?

In an open area in my room that me and my dad are setting up for me to grow, can i just have a carbon filter hanging with a fan blowing into it for it to completely remove odour as it would in a box or closet?
