Usually not. You may find an exception on the net somewhere, but usually, a ballast rated for one wattage only uses a bulb of that same wattage. What you might do is get the 1000 and veg for a shorter time. I'd ALWAYS opt for the bigger light, myself, unless the space is so small heat becomes a problem.

Are you planning on the 600 because they're more efficient? If so, the difference isn't THAT great if your only running one light. Maybe stinky will pop back in here to comment on the shorter veg time with the 1000 idea. I'm learning the finer points of lighting myself---so I'm certainly no expert.

I have not heard of a 600w working in a 1000w, but that does not mean its not out there. You could actually get 2 600w HPS lights for your grow room, now that will mean more heat, but you will be around the 180k lums range and if you get a digital ballast it will help with the electric bill. What you really should do is figure out what your total electric bill will be while in the veg stage and then you will have an idea of what type of light you should use for flowering. The ideal thing to do with veg/flower lighting is to be 1/3 your light. So if your veg'n under a 400w you would want to have 1200w for flower. So, if you already have a 400w, you could simply go to a store and get some cfl's and then you wont have to worry about the 1000w. I'm not really sure on the difference detail on the difference between 400w and 1000w for flowering as far as bud performance, but it will be just fine for what i think you are trying to get.

No. It would blow that bulb.
This is how I would do it personally if I only could afford 1 HID:
Get the 600 or 1000 HPS and veg under a bunch of 4 foot shop lights. I'd get 4-6 2-bulb fixtures to cover a 4x4 area and cram all your little plants under there until they are about 10 inches tall and sexually mature. Then switch to the big HPS for flowering.

ya , im planning on getting about 10-20 46 watt CFL's the coil type i found 2 works nice for one plant :P , soooooo , after that i might just flower with a 600w , cuz Electricity bill is a problem , i will also be changing EVERY bulb in the house to a 12w cfl so the Bill will drop , and the HPS 600watter will make up for it... so hopefully it will work , any other suggestions....

ohhh an will a 600w be alright for a 5' x 6' White mylar room , with 20 or so plants veged to around 1 foot?? or alil less? ( i foot after tieing ofcourse because i like the way my plant had more bud site on it ) ...????lemme know

    kinda crutal hehehe

Your still gonna want to watch that heat with the HPS. Just make sure you have enough vent for the heat. The best solution you could do would be to find a window, crack it, board it up, put a hole in the board big enough for a rat cage fan, then tie a tube to the fan that leads to a vent'd hood. The exhaust from the hood will go into your grow room, but the bulb will stay cool and the room should stay a nice temp. The only thing i dont know is what an outside of near 0F would do to an HPS bulb, but it should help with the heat alot. Then you can have an exhaust fan in your grow room that would go outside or where you want.

    Hope that helps.

You are planning on spending $$$ on a HID, setting up a large scale grow, etc etc, and are too lazy for something? Do you know what kind of work you are getting into? What is it that you don't want to do, the scrubber? It isn't that hard. No harder than setting up an external ballast HID and grow cab. And if you are going to all the trouble and expense, not having a good ventilation and scrubbing system is going to be devastating to your end result.
