So thats all it is advertising? if they made so much money from that they would make so much money from charging for gold membership or something

If they made it members only they would lose millions of potential customers. Open to everyone they reach a much larger audience.

Newscorp bought the parent company of Myspace for $580 million like the spring of 06 I believe.

Most internet sites are making money from advertisements. Either per unique view, a set fee, or sale of their product thought that specific advertisement.
Companys out there want people to know what they do, with millions of people on YouTube/Myspace daily/weekly, that's a wide audience market worth big bucks. Any site getting mass traffic is worth alot of monies.
