Made my decision
...to start growing. Alright, so I have a friend that has wanted to grow for a while, and I've always wanted to except I can't. I still live at home. So he got the idea, why don't me, him, and another friend throw in and start growing together! I thought hmm, sounds great. But after sitting him down and having a serious talk about it, we've decided it would be better if it's just me and him in the partnership.
So this brings us to our first problem. How will we tell our other friend he can't grow with us. Well, he's a friend. This isn't a very friendly thing to do. We could either lie and say we aren't going to grow(what I'm in favor for) or ask him very soon if he's going to and to give us the money now(which he can't because he has a court date soon and might have to pass a drug test hence he won't want to grow with us if he can't smoke etc etc). ANYWAY, theres a more basic approach. Either we lie and not let him know we're growing, or tell the truth and not grow with him but let him know. Now this is where it gets tricky. I'm not best friends with this guy, and my buddy says he's really good friends with him and trusts him a lot. Yes, I'm friends with him, but that doesn't mean I trust him that much. If we lie, he won't know and hopefully will never know. If we tell the truth he will know, and won't be apart of it. But with him knowing, thats someone to worry about. The more people that know, the higher chance we get caught. Enough rambling about him, let's get to another point.
How many people should know we grow? Of course I, my friend, and his girlfriend will know since it is his apartment. He wants his best friend to know, which I'm down with because I trust him a lot. He also wants his parents to know, which I'm down with because his parents are very cool and understanding even though his dad is pretty wacky. But is this ok? I mean, how many people can know? To be honest, I don't want anyone to know, but some have to know, so who should know? Next point.
Our area. We have a decent size closet space to use. His apartment is two bedroom, so we will be using the 2nd bedroom's closet. Are closets good to grow in? He has many books and sorts of things that has educated him a bit more than I am about growing, and he says it will be fine with intake and outtake fans. Next.
Our supplies. First up is the hydroponics kit.
6-PACK! High Yield 6 Plant NFT System W/ 400w Agromax HPS
Is this a good kit? My buddy says High Times ranked it their best bang for the buck kit, but is it what we need? Would it be cheaper or better to put one together our selves? I'm not a very crafty person, so I'm hoping the kit will be what we need. One thing I'm worried about is the lighting. I see people using like 1000 watts for 6 or 8 plants. We will only have 400 watts. But it is a closet. Is this ok? What other things will we need that isnt included in the kit? What is best to be used for the intake and outtake? (He said computer fans, one blowing in, one blowing out with a carbon filter($$$!!))
What about temperature? How will we regulate the temperature in a closet? What about smell? He was talking about building a false door out of insulation or something and putting air fresheners everywhere. I'm not quite sure how this is going to work... I mean, we do have to hide this. If anyone ever comes over, they can't know. That's the biggest problem. No one can know. So smell is very important.
Phew, I'm really tired of typing so I'll stop here. I can't remember if I wanted to talk about anything else, but I just home from work so I'm about to spark up. I'll be back to check on replies soon. Thanks a bunch guys.
p.s. Can I have y'alls AIM, MSN, or Yahoo? Would be much more convenient for conversations.n1nj4 Reviewed by n1nj4 on . Made my decision ...to start growing. I probably deserve a small slap on the wrist for not reading the whole post, but I thought it to be more important to stop reading after the first few paragraphs and address your first question immediately.
NEVER tell ANYONE about a grow unless they have **AS MUCH TO LOSE or MORE** as you do!!! That is the NUMBER ONE rule when it comes to who knows about a grow. This prevents people from flipping to get out of their own problems, not to mention a whole lot of other much more complicated problems involving chain communication etc etc. The most COMMON way grows are discovered is by WORD OF MOUTH. You don't have to lie, just don't bring the subject up. If he asks, say you thought it was risky and weren't sure if you wanted to risk it (you don't have to tell him you decided to go ahead with it). Its called omission of truth. Say as little about it as possible, and be extremely vague about what you do say. Just don't tell anyone who doesn't share the same level of risk as you. I don't mean to be preachy, but believe me, it is WAY better to get the advice than to get caught.

n1nj4 - Are you out of your ever lovin' mind?
I live in an mmj legal state and have a legal grow and still the only person who knows about my grow is a buddy who also grows. (Well, the hydro guy too - but that's kinda unavoidable. Anyway, I think hydro guys take a vow like priests or somethin...) Seriously, though, if leo discovered my grow it would be nothing more than some minor degree of inconvenience and quite possibly some good entertainment. If you get popped you face some serious legal consequences, don't you?
Man, tell your roommates g/f??? You understand, I hope, that she has one or two best friends that she could absolutely never lie to under any circumstances, and this means spilling her guts the first time her friend mentions the word pot. And her friend has a friend and so on and so forth.
Even if you do finish your grow, you'll have every m/f'ing stoner at the U lined up at your door saying, "Hey, smoke me out bro."
... but you're going to do this regardless of what anyone tells you, so, good luck!

400W will suffice for the plant count however I would not just brush off the heat issue with a couple of CPU fans. You will want to move a lot of air in order to keep smell down and that is gonna cost you dollars.
If you want to skimp on materials, your yield is gonna suffer.
I take it this is the first grow.
Hydro be tough for first time. Have you considered soil?
You are going to have about $800 in supplies to purchase. Ready for this?
8 plants will require 30 min of attention every two days. Who is gonna look after the ladies?
There is a closet growing section here, read it all...every post...
Carbon scrubber + CPU fans = now way
4-6" 275CFM axial fan + carbon scrubber + relatively air tight closet = less smell not no smell
Your third guy is gonna be pissed... Now he knows you are growing (he'll figure it out easy) and on top of that, now he is pissed, do you think he'll not tell anyone and everyone? Do NOT be stupid about this.
Parents will not support this. Don't kid me or yourself.
Remember the shit is illegal.
Enough for now.
Read, read, read......and then plant a seed.

I appreciate the posts, and I honestly don't know how you guys keep it such a secret. My buddy's best friend and parents know everything about anything. His mom and dad both smoke and support pot, and his buddy has been there by his side since middle school in all of his drug activities. I honestly don't like the fact that they know, but they will have to know. Who will take care of the plants if none of us can? I mean, if I could keep it to just me and my friend knowing, trust me I would. But that's not the case, some people have to know. Another thing, what can we do about the risks? Should we sit everyone down and talk about them? I'm not sure about his g/f. Girls do tend to have big mouths around here, and that is a scare. But for crying out loud, she lives with him. She will know.
Next.. We planned on spending about 600, but what fans should we use? Could anyone take a look at the kit and then maybe go over the other basic things we will need to make a good closet grow? I'll go check the closet grow section soon. How hard is hydro? What makes it hard? Is there anything I can do about the third party? One Love

The girlfriend will know, and so will her best friend (trust me!), who doesn't care about you guys enough to respect your secrets I'll bet.
PLEASE be careful!
IMHO, you guys are FAR better off to stay tiny, and keep nothing more than the equipment needed to start a few seedlings in February for an outdoor grow in spring.
When you are financially able to get a spot that you and only you have access to/control over, then consider flowering.
2- New Wave T5 fixtures will be perfect to get a couple trays of seedlings off to a healthy start. Finish your share of them outdoors, in separate locations that the other partners aren't aware of.
Blooming plants seem to draw trouble to young growers the way a pile of dung draws every fly in the neighborhood.

Well, I would try an outdoor grow but there is no where to do it. My friend lives in an apartment, and I live at home on the lake. Inside grow is the only option, and my friend wants to do hydro. What makes it so difficult? Can someone explain?

I don't understand where you draw that answer from... I'm not ignoring anything. I'm explaining my situation, and seeking guidance, suggestions, and anything that will help me.

A simple way to put is that soil acts as a decent buffer for ph imbalances nutrient strength problems and helps with micro nutes with hydro you and your water are responsible for everything the plants gets except light and ventilation so if you ph goes ways off or nutes are off etc. etc. the consequences are immediate and can go bad real quick, like loose everything within a week quick with some noob grower mistakes. Because you controll EVERYTHING with hydro it can be real picky if you don know what your doing.
