its kind of like the noodle incident in calving and hobbes, or the briefcase in pulp fiction.......things like that i think are better left a mystery....also like the '33' on rolling rock.

The Simpsons - State?
Series creator Matt Groening once responded to that query by citing an episode in which the Simpsons family stands in the ''five corners'', a fictional place where 5 US states meet in a perfect star. He added that the Simpsons obviously exist in a fictional America, and that the town name Springfield is used to be as generic as possible, seeing as a large number of states have a city named Springfield.
Joe America.... average person....... Anywhere, USA.
As for the contest they just had not too long ago, I found it interesting why people would say their Springfield is also the one from the show. I think the nuclear power plant is most convincing, but the city that said its mayor talks sort-of like Mayor Quimby was really dumb. 'Oh the show has to be your town because you elected a similar guy after the show had been on 15 years.'
Anyways glad to see people enjoying the Simpsons.
